Project for Improving the Information about Mortality Data from Death Certificate

This project began in August 1999 on the initiative of the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP ) through the Department of Health Informatics of the Escola Paulista de Medicina (DIS-EPM). Its main objectives are to supply an on-line searchable database of mortality data for health care professionals, scientists and policy makers, to compile a body of epidemiologic knowledge and for health care organizations to evaluate the resulting data they produce.

As a pilot scheme, we choose the mortality data files published by the Brazilian Health Ministry (DATASUS/MS). Using an Open Source Architecture, we have developed a tool to explore it dynamically on line in the Web. Due to the experimental character of this project and to the limited economic resources, we have available only the years of 1997 and 1998 brazilian resident deaths by State. We hope in this way, to contribute for the dissemination and analysis of mortality data, as well as to improve the death certificate quality information filed by physicians.
